Curry leaves or Murraya Koenigi are one of the most sought after leaves in Asia. In India this is called in general by the name “curry patta” and there is a good chance that you might find them while tasting sumptuous Indian curry dishes.

Curry leaves falls under the shrub category growing as a small tree till about 5 to 6 metres in height in all tropical regions. Researches on these leaves have revealed that every hundred grams of the leaves contain 6.2% protein, fat extract 1%, carbohydrates 16%, fibre 6.5% and mineral water 4.2 per cent along with moisture 66.1 per cent. Contents of iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C and nicotinic acid are present in the curry leaves’ mineral content.

When these leaves are processed under steam distillation through pressure it gives a volatile oil and a residual glucoside named Koenigin which gives these leaves their botanical name.

A handful of Curry leaves ground to a fine paste and mixed with 300 ml of thin buttermilk (water thinned yogurt) can be consumed in the morning with empty stomach to take care of any sort of digestive problems. The dried bark of the tree or the root of the tree is made into a powder and boiled with water to get an extract or decoction. This extract is allowed to cool. One teaspoon of this decoction has to be taken with cold water to effectively relieve kidney ailments, biliary pains or bilious vomiting.

A Treatment for Premature Greying of Hair:

The fresh curry leaves or the dried leaves are boiled with pure coconut oil along with few dried henna leaves. When this mixture turns into a dark green liquid the process is stopped and the mixture is allowed to cool down.

This oil or mixture is then filtered and applied on the hair twice a day. This potentially prevents the graying of hair prematurely. The reminder of this mixture can later be mixed with cold oil and used for herbal oil massages or skin toning. Regular intake of curry leaves daily in any form nourishes the hair roots thereby promoting new hair growth with healthier roots.
