Aegle Marmelos or Bael Tree (also known as wood apple or stone apple) is a medium sized armed deciduous tree up to 8.0 m high with straight, sharp, axillary thorns and yellowish brown shallowly furrowed corky bark. In India, it is called bael or bilwa.  Almost all parts of aegle marmelos are used for different medicinal purposes.

Infusion prepared from the aegle marmelos tree leaves is used for curing peptic ulcers. The fresh aromatic leaves of this bael tree are to be soaked in water for more than 10 hours and then the water is strained. This water has to be consumed in the morning on empty stomach to reduce the pain and cure the ulcers. The leaves have tannin that heals the inflammation and ulcers.

The juice of the fresh aegle marmelos leaves can be heated with equal quantity of sesame oil until this mixture gets reduced to three fourth of the initial quantum. Black cumin seeds and Black pepper seeds have to be added with this when the heating process is carried out.

This naturally prepared medicinal oil has to be stored and every day a tablespoonful of this medicinal oil can be massaged on the scalp, which improves the resistance towards cold and cough. This oil can also be massaged in the chest and forehead to get relief from respiratory disorders.

The bael fruit is woody and smooth with 5 to 15 cm diameter.  This fruit contains proteins, carbohydrates, fibers and minerals in a high concentration with a caloric value of 137. The minerals contained by the aegle marmelos fruit are distributed in the form of calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C.

The bael fruit is aromatic, cooling and also a laxative. It cleans up and tones the intestines while strengthening the stomach and its regular functions.
